One of the huge bonuses of living in a place like Florida is the chance to have a beautiful lawn no matter what the season at hand. That beautiful color you can peek out your window and see, no matter what the time of year, is a great reason to live right here. Perhaps you are wondering how best to maintain that bright look, even as your northern friends battle the March cold? These tips can help your grass look amazing, even in the winter.

Start with Overseeding: Florida-Lawn-Care-year-roundWhile there are several winter grasses that grow well throughout the state, one of the most popular is ryegrass. There are three different kinds you can choose from including the annual variety, the intermediate variety, and the perennial variety.

No matter what you select, though, you can expect a great price and a solid growth rate from the outset. You have to overseed it before you can do anything else, though, It’s a temporary grass, and by the time it dies, your permanent grass comes back. The overseeding, though, is key. You’ll want to do that in late November or early December, just as things are cooling off. Rake your lawn, mow it closely, then dethatch if you must. You’ll want to go with 10lbs over 1000 square feet, and you may want to use a mechanical seeder. Water lightly until it’s completely germinated, then water only as you need to.

Maintain Carefully: Your winter grass is, well, grass, so you’ll need to do some maintenance. Have your lawn care service handle the mowing, watering, and fertilizing on a regular basis. You can’t mow, though, until it hits about an inch in height. A mowing schedule of every other week is usually best, but be sure the mower blades are as sharp as possible.
