They look terrifying. Crawling up a wall or out of your bedtime reading material, silverfish can really frighten you. Silverfish are most active at night, which is part of the reason they can create such a scare. While these pesky creatures are found throughout the U.S., they really love moist, humid areas, which perfectly describes the entire state of Florida. Maybe that’s why silverfish are Florida’s top seasonal pests in winter, where, it’s almost always moist and humid.

What  are Silverfish?

These pests are typically silver to brown in color. They’re usually a half inch long, not including their tail. Their bodies are a bit flatter than many other bugs, and they have a teardrop shape. The antennae on their bodies is long and threadlike in nature. They can be found almost anywhere in the house, and the females lay one to three eggs each day. Silverfish tend to live about three years.

Are They Dangerous?

These continual Florida winter pests aren’t actually dangerous. Instead, they’re more of a nuisance. They can cause some property damage. They will chew holes in your clothing or upholstery. They can also chew through paper goods.
