Fall is a beautiful time of year for trees, especially if you have taken the time to care for them throughout the spring and summer. In order to enjoy the trees after winter, there is still more maintenance to be done during fall. In fact, there are 3 essential things you can do to keep your trees as healthy as possible.

Tip 1 – Once the leaves have all fallen off, it is time for a dormant inspection to be done. Check each tree for cracks in the bark leaking sticky fluid, bark that’s falling off, weird growths, discoloration or anything else that seems strange. If there are any trees, upon inspection which have become ill or damaged beyond repair, take them out and replace them.

Tip 2 – For the young trees, take time to look over the structure. Make a decision as to where pruning needs to take place. The cuts on the trees heal faster in the late fall and winter because the rains during the spring often bring various fungi and bacteria, which can be damaging to the cuts. Take off the season’s growth, or at least most of it. On the older trees, make sure to take off any dead wood and any areas which are starting to become diseased.

Tip 3 – Finally, apply appropriate pest control measures to each tree. Your landscaping professional can help you decide just what needs to be done with each, but despite the cooler temperatures, pests can still be a problem during the coming months.
